Gentrification

In the article “What is Gentrification, Really?” the author goes in a more depth study on the word then most would. He first gives the definition we are all familiar with. He then goes to tell us the origins of the word and it how it was modified as time passed.  The author states “The term agentlea here implies what we might expect: freedom from conflict and hardship, from the rigors of the aworking lifea”. This quote is to clarify what he sees what the word gentrification means; that gentrification is a change to an ease, elegance and novelty, a gentle existence.

The article has a lot of format issues.

Gentrification

http://ny.curbed.com/2016/5/9/11641588/nyc-top-15-gentrifying-neighborhoods-williamsburg-harlem-bushwick

This article defines gentrification as neighborhoods that once had low average household incomes and within the last recent years they have started to become high-income neighborhoods as rent has increased.  Warerkar used the State of New York City’s Housing and Neighborhoods 2015 Report to show what neighborhoods have seen an increase in rent and are gentrifying.  The study categorized areas as gentrifying, non-gentrifying and high-income, so it makes me think about how much higher the rent is in the high-income neighborhoods in comparison to these other neighborhoods and how its affecting residents.

Gentrification is more than what people think !

This article defines gentrification as “a process of neighborhood change involving the migration of wealthier residents into poorer neighborhoods and increased economic investment” (Ordway, 2014). In other words, slowly moving out the poor out of their affordable housing in order to make it more into a middle-class environment. This article states that things will be better for certain environments if the area is gentrified. This article makes me want to know more about if this is something that is institutionalized as far as is something that actually wealthier people want to do in order to change and improve poor communities.https://journalistsresource.org/studies/economics/real-estate/gentrification-urban-displacement-affordable-housing-overview-research-roundup

Gentrification Article

The article listed above defines gentrification as a fundamental political process. This article explains that there is a “double movement” between the neighborhoods of Harlem and Prenzlauger Berg, Berlin. Both are being impacted negatively by the market economy, and the relation between public policies and gentrification is unstable. This articles makes me want to know more about why the public policies are allowing these neighborhoods to have a higher poverty rate and how they plan to fix it.

Scholarly Article on Gentrification

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/29/nyregion/gentrification-in-a-brooklyn-neighborhood-forces-residents-to-move-on.html

In “Gentrification in a Brooklyn Neighborhood forces residents to move on,” by Vivian Lee defines gentrification as transformations that are made in a specific neighborhood, in this case Brooklyn. This article uses gentrification in order to explain why people are moving out of houses in Brooklyn because of overpriced living and renovations being made to to these specific apartments. Landlords are seeking for a better source of living. I want to know more about how these renovations have impacted the lives of these individuals that are basically being forced to flee from their homes. How do these citizens feel? and how can we put a stop to this problem?
