Conclusion

Tenure is an ineffective solution to improving universities because it creates barriers within that university.  In fact, tenure’s limitations comes from the way it uses up a universities budget and its negative effect on professors teaching styles. Perhaps lowering the entry qualifications for tenure and bringing in more professors will give a greater influence towards more modernized courses.

Quotes: Direct quote and paraphrase

Drug usage plays a big role in America’s death rate. Editorial Board (2017), from NY time’s article, acknowledges “Public health officials have called the current opioid epidemic the worst drug crisis in American history, killing more than 33,000 people in 2015”(p.1). This statistic shows how serious the drug epidemic is in America and how many deaths has resulted from it in the previous year.   Similarly, Woodruff (2016) illustrates how from 2013 having “192” drug related deaths has increased to “342” deaths in 2015 (p.1). Woodruff illustrates how drug associated deaths alone has nearly doubled over the course of 2 years.

Chasing the Scream

In Chasing the scream, author Johann Hari uses the idea of addiction as a key focus in one of his chapters. The impression that addiction has not only a physical dependency but also a mental dependency is explored and also, how addiction can be influenced by a person’s environment.

For instance, a study was done where rats were placed in an empty cage and given two bottles of water, one with just water and the other with morphine. The rats were left there over a period of time and later researchers would check which bottle the rats drunk from the most. After conducting the first experiment it was concluded that the rats were addicted because of the chemical dependency. However, Bruce the main character argues that because the rats were placed in an empty cage they had nothing better to do but drink the morphine water. He was able to prove this theory with a follow up experiment identical to the first one, but making two sets of cages. One empty and one with items that rats can enjoy, such as a wheel and fun colors and other rats. The rats were all given morphine water, then after the same time elapsed, researchers noticed that the rats in the more interactive cage didn’t continue drinking any morphine water, while the empty cage had the same results as the first experiment. This gave room for the assumption that addiction can be continued by what someone is surrounded by.

Brue describes addiction, other than looking at the chemical dependency, as a “psychological state of feeling you need the drug to give you the sensation of feeling calmer, … or what ever it does for you.” This statement was the follow up response after a number of evidence were described. After reading the different proofs I cannot help but agree with Bruce. It seems that addiction is mainly psychological, with every case having a deeper situation behind. These findings are important to understand and further investigate because this could be a potential break through needed to lower the number of addicts in existence.

Credible Article: “Drug use in adolescents in relation to social support and reactive and proactive aggressive behavior”

http://web.a.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail/detail?vid=7&sid=c1e4eca1-947a-4d14-9f2a-3fc6e2c3d149%40sessionmgr4009&hid=4106&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#AN=116969074&db=a9h

The link above is to an article analyzing the relationship between adolescents who use drugs, aggressive behavior, and societies influences. The purpose of the paper was to address whether social support influences decision making on drug use and the behavior of adolescents.  This article is credible because it has a collection of six authors who hold the experience and the education that supports their work.

I believe the main author is Jesus Gazquez, Jose is a full professor in the department of psychology at the University of Almeria and the director of the department of psychology and education. He has done many other works in the field of psychology that holds up, which makes him credible.

MEAT

“A linguistic celebration,” is what Jamila lyiscott states when she describes how she is articulate in today’s society. Jamila shows how articulation can be shaped by a persons surroundings.

“And when I’m on the block I switch it up just because I can. So when my boy says, “What’s good with you son?” I just say, “I jus’ fall out wit dem people but I done!”

When she is around her peers she is able speak in a way that is still articulate. Even though people that are not familiar with that form of english may say they are speaking is inarticulate, it is still articulate within that certain group.  The idea of articulation can be controlled by the environment. She addresses the question of conflict: What may not be understood and logical by one may still be to the other, so who is really the articulate one?

Salima’s post on empathy

How are writing and empathy connected?

Empathy is known as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.” The idea of writing is to be able to express your own thoughts or feelings on paper in a way that readers can also understand and relate. Writing and empathy are connected because they both are an expression and understanding of ones feelings. You can be empathic in your writing, for instance, when you write a biography. In order to write a successful piece on someone’s life you have to first understand it, and then be able to rely the message in such a way that feelings from accounts of that person’s life are relatable.

What is the value of both?

The value of writing and empathy is historic accounts are recorded and understandable. Entertainment is enhanced, such as the difference from reading an okay book and an outstanding book. Both help people understand what goes on in the world from decades ago to the present day. All in all, both builds bridges between individuals by allowing them to understand each others feelings and emotions.
