extra credit exit ticket

Accepting syrian refugees into the U.S. is the least we could do. accepting syrians into countries have become a hard task since people are scared of the repercussions after doing so.  According to  Ignatieff (2015) “The refugee crisis isn’t a ‘European one'” he claims “the worst are the petro states …many of them have been funneling arms into syria for years, and what have they done to give new homes to the four million people trying to flee? Nothing.” if we fund these syrian rebels isn’t it our responsibility to help the people who don’t want to be caught in the middle of it flee? maybe we should listen to Ignatieff he is a former politician who is well known for his work as a historian. Ignatieff also states that “blaming the europeans is an alibi and the rest of our excuses- like the refugees don’t have the right papers- are sickening” and this is true because the U.S. like many other countries can do so much more, this is proven by our past and how we used to ‘be able to rise to the occasion’ according to Ignatieff “canada, sent a government minister to vienna in late 1956  to support a processing center that took in hundreds of hungarians and airlifted them to canada after the soviets crushed the hungarian uprising.”

tenure conclusion

although tenure fixed the problem of teachers being fired without a good reason it created another problem when it lost its ability to modernize teaching due to protecting these teachers. in fact it has caused teachers to stick to their outdated teaching methods. Maybe if teachers had to present their teaching methods to the board of education every semester they would be sufficient in having to update their work.

2/17 hw

in the article “lockdown” the author michelle alexander tries to show to the readers how the criminal justice system has “few legal rules that meaningfully constrain the police in the war on drugs” and how “it has made the roundup of millions of americans for nonviolent drug offenses relatively easy”. she proves this to the reader by using the change in the fourth amendment and how “the supreme court has seized every opportunity to facilitate the drug war, primarily by eviscerating fourth amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures by the police”. she also states that “the police could not stop and search someone without a warrant unless there was probable cause to believe that the individual was engaged in criminal activity. that was basic fourth amendment principle.” but in Terry vs. Ohio, the supreme court modified their understanding, by ruling that if and when a police officer observes unusual conduct by someone the officer is entitled for the protection of himself and others in the area to conduct a limited search to discover weapons that might be used against the officer. known as the stop-and-frisk rule. this is an important part of her argument because now the reader can see that the police no longer have to have any reason to search someone. alexander argues this by using the case Florida vs. Bostick where a “Random” search occurred and lead to Terrance Bostick’s arrest. other courts argued that this is how we start racial and ethnic discrimination. so it’s no surprise when he percentage of drug arrests that result in prison sentences have quadrupled proving Alexander’s point. police with no constraint will lead to more racial and ethnic discrimination which will lead to more searches arrests.

3 ways to speak english summary

Summary

Jamila Lyiscott the speaker of the “3 ways to speak English” explains how she speaks English with her friends, parents, and classmates should be known as articulate. For example when Lyiscott says “I’m articulate but who controls articulation? Because the English language is a multifaceted oration subject to indefinite transformation.” She is  letting us know that English is already a made up language as all languages are. when she says her languages are equal she is showing us that as long as she is understood it doesn’t matter of which 3 of her languages she speaks she is still articulate. Lyiscott proves this because  as she just said “english is a subject to indefinite transformation” she shows the English language is always changing and she is just speaking in a different form of English that has been modified with its own set of rules not a wrong form of English.
