Tenure Conclusion – Extra Credit

Tenure has shown to be an ineffective solution for improving universities. In fact, tenure can be the limitation factor to provide quality education for students. Perhaps universities would have less tenured professors if they were aware of how they affect their students’ education.

Sample Conclusion

Tenure limits quality education for students and causes professors to teach more outdated material. In fact, research shows that neither colleges nor students benefits from tenured professors. Adjunct professors, which usually makes up most of a college’s teaching staff, also does not benefit from tenure. Perhaps colleges don’t realize the impact of having tenured professors has on their adjunct professors.

Black Students are less likely to get a job than White Students

In order to fix the problem why Black students are less likely to get a job than White students, we need to create more career counseling programs in predominantly black schools. By creating awareness through social media, we can have a fundraiser targeted toward philanthropists to make sure black students are gaining access and building their qualifications for jobs. This would be an effective solution because philanthropists would sponsor internships and volunteer programs which would give black students more opportunities to build their experience. Other solutions proposed such as blind resumes won’t work because there’s no way to track if businesses are really staying true to the concept of being blind.

Practice Literature Review- 3 articles

The number of Americans that are addicted to drugs is on the rise. According to Childress (2016), “Until a few years ago, the VA was treating veterans’ chronic pain almost exclusively with prescriptions for opioid painkillers. Prescriptions for opiates spiked by 270 percent over 12 years, according to a 2013 analysis by the Center for Investigative Reporting, leading to addictions and a fatal overdose rate twice the national average” (para. 3). Americans that are battling drug addiction need better treatment options. Part of the reason for this is that doctors are continually giving patients drugs to cover up their health problems instead of finding better ways to treat it. If doctors gave patients different treatments options instead of only prescribing pills, the number of Americans addicted to drugs will decrease.

Doctors opened the door to addiction by over-prescribing drugs to their patients. Many patients that use drugs initially start using it to get rid of their pain. They do not use drugs with the intention of becoming dependent on them.

Drugs : Summary “Can You Get Over and Addiction?”

In the New York Times article, Can you get over an Addiction?, Maia Szalavitz writes on the importance of changing the way we view addiction. The author begins the article telling about her past struggles with drug addiction. She then shares that there are “two schools of thought on addiction: The first was that my brain had been chemically “hijacked” by drugs, leaving me no control over a chronic, progressive disease. The second was simply that I was a selfish criminal, with little regard for others.” Treatments are made using these schools of thought on addiction. It is important to change the way we view addiction because many existing forms of treatment doesn’t work. Szalavitz says: “Addiction is indeed a brain problem, but it’s not a degenerative pathology like Alzheimer’s disease or cancer, nor is it evidence of a criminal mind. Instead, it’s a learning disorder, a difference in the wiring of the brain that affects the way we process information about motivation, reward and punishment. And, as with many learning disorders, addictive behavior is shaped by genetic and environmental influences over the course of development.” With this revelation, people can view addiction in a different light.

Understanding addiction from a neurodevelopmental perspective offers a great deal of hope. Scientists are now starting to recognize which brain regions are involved in addiction and how. “In essence, addiction occurs when these brain systems are focused on the wrong objects: a drug or self-destructive behavior like excessive gambling instead of a new sexual partner or a baby. Once that happens, it can cause serious trouble.” Drugs like heroin are sometimes used when someone is feeling alienated, unlovable and stressed. When they are using drugs, they feel temporary relief of their problems. Once the person is used to feeling the relief that the drugs can give them, they become addicted. Once we understand that addiction is just different brain wiring, we can begin to teach recovery.

3 Ways to Speak English-Summary

In Jamila Lysicott’s spoken-word video, she uses the different types of English she speaks to explain how articulate she is. She talks about each forms of English: the standard American English she speaks in the classroom, the Ebonics or “street talk” she speaks with her friends, and the broken English that she speaks with her family at home. She also challenges the idea that the only way to be articulate is to speak the standard English. She says, “yes, I have decided to treat all three of my languages as equals, because I’m articulate.” Jamila explains that she is articulate not only when she speaks Standard English, but also when she speaks broken English and “street talk” English.

How are writing and empathy similar and what is the value of empathy?

Empathy is one of the most important tools that are used in writing. Empathy is shown in many pieces of writing. Books, newspaper articles, and other forms of literature display empathy. For example, the author of an article can use empathy to try to feel the pain and understand the circumstances of what the person who they are writing about is feeling. Empathy is very valuable in writing as well as in everyday life. In writing, empathy is important so that readers can put themselves in other people’s shoes.  Without empathy, people would do things to hurt others, without thinking of how the other person may feel.
