How are writing and empathy similar and what is the value of empathy?

Empathy is one of the most important tools that are used in writing. Empathy is shown in many pieces of writing. Books, newspaper articles, and other forms of literature display empathy. For example, the author of an article can use empathy to try to feel the pain and understand the circumstances of what the person who they are writing about is feeling. Empathy is very valuable in writing as well as in everyday life. In writing, empathy is important so that readers can put themselves in other people’s shoes.  Without empathy, people would do things to hurt others, without thinking of how the other person may feel.

Hi Deanna, I like that you get straight to the point in your first sentence. It’s clear you believe empathy works as a tool in writing. What I was unclear on is the way empathy works in writing. Sure, you do have a great definition here, and it does wonders to indicate the value of empathy in understanding another’s circumstance, but I wanted to know how the reveals itself in a newspaper article. Maybe a specific example from a journal or newspaper might have helped.

I would also suggest utilizing something called the MEAL strategy to help you develop paragraphs and avoid repeating yourself. It is as follows:
Main Idea
Example of main idea
Analysis/explanation of this example
Link to another example related to main idea
Example
Analysis…

See if this helps structure your writing, particularly for short responses like this.

Can’t wait to hear more from you!
