Empathy Rules !

Shakira De La Cruz

How are writing and empathy similar?

Writing and empathy are similar in multiple ways. For example, they are similar in the way of understanding someone’s circumstances verbally. If someone writes something to you to show how much they understand the situation that you are coming from it relates to empathy because that person was able to put themselves in your shoes to comprehend exactly what you are going through. Writing and empathy are also similar in the way of expressing how someone feels throughout the certain situation that they are going through, which is something that you can express in writing or in person.

What is the value of empathy?

Empathy has many values. The value of empathy can be caring for one’s problems or difficult situations. The value of empathy can also be the way we are able to connect with others and share the same experiences in order to show support and the fact that you understand what the person is going through. Empathy can also be looked as something that we all need in life so that as a human being we can feel like we are not alone in this world, fighting against battles or problems that others may have never encounter, so is a good thing to show empathy to others. Showing empathy can also be very helpful in terms of how a person feels within themselves after having a connection with someone else.

Hi Shakira! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on empathy and writing. You’ve noted a key aspect of both terms: needing to understand something beyond ourselves. Writing is not about repeating what you know– it’s a process of discovery– that is figuring out how to understand something that is absolutely outside of what you know.

Over the course of the semester, I’d like you to be cautious of phrases like “in terms of” and “in the way of.” These tricky phrases act like they are going to do a lot of work for us, but in fact, they don’t do very much. Additionally, specificity can be your best friend in writing. When you talk about value of empathy being caring for one’s problems– you might’ve offered a specific example to illustrate the point you were trying to make. Remember, for people to understand what you are talking about, they need something concrete to hold on to. That is a specific example!

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
