Ben Carson

Claim #3: The refugees were involved in the attacks in Paris; therefore they’ll plan other attacks. How can we criticize this claim? What are possible weaknesses here?  It is interesting to note that Ben Carson’s claim is baseless because history has it that most terrorist attacks that happened in the United States were either committed by U.S. born citizens or people from other countries who come here through other means. There are a few number of  terrorist attacks that were caused by Muslim refuges.  Friedman (2017) reports that ” Over the last four decades, 20 out of 3.25 million refugees welcomed to the United States have been convicted of attempting or committing terrorism on U.S. soil, and only three Americans have been killed in attacks committed by refugees—all by Cuban refugees in the 1970s”,  as cited by Nowrasteh. Ben Carson’s claim  is not based on any evidence, and has no credibility. Throughout his article he has not cited any sample to back his claims. Ben was merely pointing out his personal viewpoint. Friedman (2017) writes , according to Nowrasteh “Between 1975 and 2015, the “annual chance of being murdered by somebody other than a foreign-born terrorist was 252.9 times greater than the chance of dying in a terrorist attack committed by a foreign-born terrorist” .  Muslim refuges that comes to U.S. are low abiding individuals, hard working, loving and caring. There are so many people who hide behind Islam with their hidden agenda and commit crimes in the name of Jihad. Further more Ben has not presented any evidence to substantiate his claims, his claim is weak.

You have such great refutations of Carson’s claim here. You note the flaw in his logic– most attacks happen by US born citizens– therefore refugees aren’t even part of the issue. You also cite stats that further support the uselessness in fearing refugees. Note your techniques here as you can easily use them in your literature review when you present a counterclaim that goes against your solution. Notice you defeated the counterclaim by presenting facts that disprove his points and noting a fallacy– hasty generalization.

Great work!
