The opioid drug crisis has damaged our public health and public safety issues. Drug abuse has always been a challenge for this country and it seems that we are not doing anything to prevent the worsening of this situation. For example, Linda Saunders Paquette (2016) points out to us that “addiction is a chronic relapsing brain disease” (p. 5). In other words, addiction is something that can destroy our way of thinking and the way we see reality, due to having this addiction as a disease that is effecting our brain on a daily basis. The easy access of drugs has also caused many deaths. Overdose deaths occurs once an addict gets there hand on a certain drug that they crave more than their normal treatment (Gatsas, 2016). These two examples both support how damaged our public health and public safety is. This is both hurting the community and people lives because they are deteriorating themselves and the environment that they live in.

What works really well here is your common idea sentence– you’re right, both articles do spend time talking about the public health crisis that stems from opioid drugs. Right now, I am a little confused by the relationship your quote has to your common idea. Yes your quotes PROVE the main idea sentence, but I wanted you to spend some time explaining HOW your quote/paraphrase are relevant to the conversation. For instance, when you define addiction as a brain disease, you might’ve indicated how that makes it such an important epidemic to attend to and the way in which that harms the publics’ health overall. Instead you talk about brain disease as defining the way we see things– but what does that explanation have to do with?
Your APA in-text are right no EXCEPT– you only need the last name no need for the first– AND you want to indicate page number after a paraphrase as well. If it is a paragraph you are citing it would be: (para. 5).
